This Month's Talk: "Ice Ages in the South West" by Chris Woodward.

This talk looks at what is meant by the term ’Ice Age’ with brief reference to deep geological time as well as the last 2.5 million years we call the Pleistocene.

The questions as to why & how we experienced such extreme will be briefly addressed (even if no definitive answers are reached - it’s complicated!) as well as what informed predictions can be made from this data for the future climatic conditions.

Although not actually below an ice sheet, I will look at some of the legacy features left by these conditions in the South-west region. If time permits, I will briefly look at the history of human evolution over the past million years or so as well as the amazing creatures (now long extinct) that once roamed this land. I will also bring along a range of fossils belonging these creatures.

Chris Woodward is a retired teacher of Geology & Geography and is now a Jurassic Coast Ambassador. He is based in East Devon.
