17 July: Lincombe

Nature Walk Group: along the coast path to Lincombe.

This morning 10 of us from the Nature Walks group went on a lovely walk with a very knowledgeable lepidopterist, Paul Butter, to see what Butterflies and day-time flying moths were around.

We started on the footpath going down to National Trust land to Lincombe without seeing many moths or butterflies as the weather was little dull but one we did see was a Dark Sward-grass moth which is a migrant moth coming all the way from France or even Spain.

As we got to the meadow the sun came out and so did many more b’s and m’s such as Meadow Brown, Ringlet and Six-spot Burnet. We walked on further to the Look-out Seat, staying a few moments to enjoy the view before doubling back. What a view.

We finished the walk going a little way towards Weston where Paul spotted a Six-belted Clearwing, looking nothing like a moth. We also saw a Tiger moth. No not the bi-plane but its namesake, a lovely colourful moth. We also saw a couple of Marbled whites which is a beautiful butterfly, better than any pictures show of it, which made Christina’s morning.

Also seen were: Wood White, Speckled Wood, Gatekeeper and Red Admiral - all butterflies.

Thank you Paul.
