20 May 2026: Feel lichen Knapp?

Nature Walks Group: Lichen spotting in the Knapp Nature Reserve

On Wednesday 20th May a small group of us from the nature walks group met up at Sidmouth cemetery and were joined by April Windle, a local lichen expert.

We proceeded to the orchard in the Knapp Nature Reserve, fruit trees being very good for various types of lichen. We had a very good look around and April provided us with booklets and hand lenses to help identify the lichen, of which the average tree could support up to 20 various species. Our target was 7, of which most of us eventually found plus a very well camouflaged caterpillar of the brussels lace moth.

All in all a very good morning with an excellent guide.
