Nature Walks Group: Searching for Lichen in Sidmouth Cemetery.

May’s Nature Walk just happened to be on the first wet day for a long time but April’s (our leader not the month) love, enthusiasm and knowledge of the subject of lichens helped us forget the cold and damp of the morning.

Leading us from underneath a very old weeping silver birch in Sidmouth Cemetery we learnt the difference between Foliose, Fructose and Crustose lichens. After finding these on branches and gravestones we looked at them under a lens. Some looked like beautiful art works that had taken many hours to produce.
