Birdwatching at the Powderham Heronry

The birders last walk of March was with the intention of seeing the Herons at the Powderham Heronry, said to be the largest Heronry in the area. And we weren’t disappointed although things looked a little quiet when we got there. But it wasn’t long, after getting “our eyes in” that we saw quite a lot of activity, captured by Martin. We couldn’t see if they were still sitting on eggs (3-5) or if they had chicks but it is at the end of March beginning of April when they hatch and later fledge after 50 to 55 days old, so still more to see for some time.
Afterwards we went up the estuary a little way but there wasn’t much about but we did see the most cutest, smartest little wader quite close up, the Ringed Plover which we viewed for quite a few minutes running up and down the rocks before we decided it was time to walk back to our cars and lunch.
