Exploring Art Group at Sculpture by the Lakes, near Dorchester

Hidden along the tranquil valley of Dorset’s River Frome, 15 minutes from Dorchester, Sculpture by the Lakes comprises ponds, pools, bubbling streams, lakes and the fast flowing River Frome, trails through meadows and woodland, along riverbanks and over bridges. A haven for wildlife, the Sculpture Park marries the soft beauty of nature’s wild river landscape with the more formal presentation of monumental outdoor sculpture. This unique Sculpture Park displays the work of Simon Gudgeon and over 20 other outstanding sculptors with each sculpture placed to visually enhance its surroundings.
We had a lovely day out, ambling along meandering pathways by beautiful lakes in the sunshine. What more could anyone want? Well, sculptures of course, because we were visiting Sculpture by the Lakes, in preparation for our Sculpture project. There was a lot of discussion about the sculptures, sparking off ideas about what we want to make in our next workshop session later in October. The sound sculptures, made of hanging steel tubes, were a particular favourite, with several of us eager to demonstrate how they work. We probably won't be able to make any of those because we will be using air-drying clay. Sculpture by the Lakes is a destination to be recommended (and the cakes in the cafe were first class).
