Join us on a visit to Castle Drogo, which was designed by the celebrated architect Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1911, and is known as the last castle to be built in England.
His client was Julius Drewe, in pursuit of a dream to create an ancestral home on Dartmoor. He was inspired by a claimed link to the Norman baron Drogo de Teign. Drewe was a wealthy tea merchant and founder of Home & Colonial Stores. He also owned much of Broadhembury village near Honiton, including The Drewe Arms pub, and where the family still live.
Despite delays, scaling down and persistent leaks, the castle was habitable enough to move in by 1926 and finally completed in 1930. The castle and 600 acre estate was passed to the National Trust in 1974 and the Trust finished the restoration of the roof in 2021.
Outside the Lutyens designed garden is colourful in all seasons, and there are miles of pathways to explore in the Teign Gorge.
Lutyens’ genius and Drewe’s vision combined to produce a truly remarkable building.
